Tieg Nói Lu'u Vong: Moving Voices from Vietnam

The Vietnamese Oral History Project Exhibit

August 6 – October 17, 2010

Opening Reception: Friday, August 6, 6-9p

Gallery Talk: Thursday, September 30, 6p

Tiếng Noí Lưu Vong : Moving Voices documents the development of the Vietnamese Oral History Project. Sstarted initially as a project to learn more about the life of Vietnamese after the Vietnam War has grown into a project to record and preserve the story of the local Vietnamese community. The photographs, artifacts and oral history recordings on display give voice to Louisville’s Vietnamese community and the project team, during the initial phases of the project.

Their stories of pre-war Vietnam, the Vietnam War, and subsequent settlement and assimilation into Louisville add a unique and compelling voice to the cultural fabric of our larger community. Crane House and the Vietnamese community have partnered to create the first archive of oral histories and cultural artifacts that preserve these stories and establish an important cultural record for Louisville. Working with the University of Louisville, Morehead State University, Vietnam Veterans of America Kentuckiana Chapter #454, and the Outreach Committee members of Crane House, the project has been able to grow and succeed.

The exhibit is a preview of a larger show celebrating the 35-year history of the Vietnamese in Louisville, planned for the spring of 2011. The Vietnamese Oral History Project is the first step in a larger initiative to archive the history of Asian immigration into our region that will serve as an important resource for research into the lives of Asians settling into areas of the United States with few or no established Asian communities.

This project is made possible through the generous support of volunteers from the Vietnamese Community; Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 454 of Jeffersontown, Kentucky; The Former Vietnamese Political Prisoner Association of Louisville, Kentucky; University of Louisville, Vietnamese Student Association, Morehead State University, BoatPeople SOS and a generous External Agency grant from Louisville Metro Government.
