Building History
The original building at 1244 South Third Street in Louisville, Kentucky was constructed in 1883 for Charles M. Garth, owner of the Garth and Schroder Tobacco Company. Garth was also responsible for the 1892 addition, designed by the prestigious firm of McDonald Brothers.
The main block of the house and its 1892 north addition are significant examples of the late nineteenth century residential styles in Old Louisville. It is one in a row of grand and elegant Italianate residences.
1244 South Third Street was designated a local landmark in 1974, and was added to the National Register in 1975.
