Crane House
Asian New Year Dinner and Auction
A Roaring Success!
Crane House, The Asia Institute, Inc. and its guests celebrated the Year of the Tiger during the 22nd annual Asian New Year Dinner and Auction held Saturday, February 20 at the Henry Clay. With guests at capacity, the wide array and number of auction items donated and the amount of money raised, this year’s event can be counted as one of the most successful in the Dinner’s history.
This black-tie event is the largest fundraiser Crane House produces and generates over $50,000 for educational and programming initiatives. The funds raised at the event are a key resource in successfully fulfilling the organizational mission of facilitating cultural understanding between the peoples of the United States and Asia through art and education.
The 2010 Asian New Year Dinner and Auction recognized the newly formed partnership between Crane House, The Asia Institute, Inc. and the University of Louisville by welcoming University of Louisville President Dr. James Ramsey and his wife Jane as honorary event chairs.
Guests began the evening perusing the silent auction while sipping the evening’s signature cocktail, the Bengal Tiger, created especially for the evening by Brown-Forman Corp. and featuring Finlandia Vodka.
The Louisville Lion Dance Team performed and led guests into the Beaux Arts Ballroom for dinner where they feasted on Asian inspired cuisine created by the Silver Spoon, including sushi, Char Sui glazed beef and curried rice with dried fruit.
During dinner, Crane House Executive Director Bryan Warren presented the 2009 Ambassador Award, which recognizes the individual who has worked diligently to promote cultural understanding between people of the United States and the countries of Asia. Born in China, recipient Gerald G. Tyrrell has been a Crane House board member since 1988, and served two different terms as its President and three as treasurer. His friends and colleagues note his organizational skill, keen understanding of the importance of Asia to our community’s growth and sly sense of humor as some of the characteristics that have made him an invaluable contributor to Crane House’s growth over the last 20 years. He and his wife Betsy, continue to generously contribute their volunteer time and financial support to Crane House’s mission.
The evening was capped off with a rousing live auction which offered incredible pieces of art and jewelry as well as elegant dinner parties and vacation hot spots.
