Lion Dance Costume
Gift of Calvin Lang
The lion dance is practiced across Asia, but there are regional differences in costume. This child's lion dance costume comes from southern China. Its eyes, ears and mouth move independently. It has a single, prominent horn atop its head. The lion mimics a mythical Chinese creature, the nian. Lion dance is traditionally performed at the lunar new year to ward off evil spirits and demons such as the nian.
