Ash Woolson
Kempo Kujo: Supporters of Article Nine, the Japanese Peace Constitution
August 5—October 7, 2011
Friday, August 5, 6p - Opening Reception
Tuesday, October 4, 6p - Exhibition Talk
Open Saturday, August 6, September 10, October 1
11a to 4p
In 2008, photographer Ash Woolson captured the images of participants of a walk from Hiroshima (on the anniversary of the historic Atomic bombing) to Tokyo, Japan, a total of one thousand miles. The purpose of the walk was to create awareness in support of Article Nine of the Japanese constitution, which guarantees a pacifist government. The photographs provide a window into the changing social structure of Japan and its role in the world community. They document Ash’s experience and simultaneously capture an instance of the passing of the pacifist cause from the World War II generation to the millennial generation. The exhibit presents global themes of responsibility and sustainability, and is a reminder that we must learn from and never forget the violence in our past.
