News photoUK Lecture Series: Japanese Artists in 1920s Paris
October 14, 6p
Admission is free
Douglas Slaymaker, Director of Japanese Studies Program at the University of Kentucky will present a fascinating look at the influence of the “lost generation” and the central role that Paris occupied in the Japanese imagination. Japanese artists travelled to Paris in the 1920s for the same reasons as others: it was the most exciting city in the world, it was a refuge from a constricting society at home, and it was the city for art. Slaymaker will look to the imagery produced by painter Fujita Tsuguharu (1886-1968) and that of poet and painter Kaneko Mitsuharu (1895-1975) to think about the Parisian experience of Japanese in the interwar years.  What does it mean to be Japanese; what does it mean to be Japanese in Paris? are among the questions to be considered. This program will be presented at Crane House. Cosponsored by the University of Kentucky Alumni Association.

http://www.asianart.org/shanghai/images/garrickfamilyphoto.jpgTrans-Planted Memory: A Play About Shanghai Jews During WWII
Thursday, October 21, 6p
Admission is free
David Y. Chack, Chicago-based theatre producer, adjunct professor, writer, and part-time Louisville resident has been developing this production with playwright William Huizhou Sun and artistic director Jeffrey Sichel of UNESCO ITI. Mr. Chack will present a staged reading of the play and speak about the history and production of the play.

Due to the impending Holocaust, over 20,000 Jews from Europe escaped to Shanghai. It is in Shanghai that these Jews transplanted their Jewish lives amidst the Chinese and Japanese. The fictionalized play North Bank, Suzhou Creek, being developed with the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center, provides a historic touchstone and dramatic account of this phenomenal tale of Jews, Japanese, and Chinese under extraordinary conditions. Centering on a Jewish father and daughter who own and operate a popular restaurant in the Jewish Quarter of Shanghai during the Second World War, they must confront the evil and love that fatally bring them to this unique moment and place. Framed within the culture and songs of the time in China, America, German, European and Yiddish culture – the play crafts an inter-cultural portrayal and the results of the costs of survival.

http://qfichennai.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/77-c.jpg?w=300 UK Lecture Series: Cultures of the Cold War in China and East Germany
November 4, 6p
Admission is free
University of Kentucky Asst. Professor of Chinese Literature and Culture, Liang Luo will discuss the rhetoric of identity “remolding” which occurred in composer Hanns Eisler, playwright Bertolt Brecht, Dutch filmmaker Joris Ivens and Chinese writer Tian Han. Similar to the trio of Ivens, Brecht, and Eisler, who worked in East Germany in the 1950s, Chinese writer Tian Han was inside the Communist camp at the height of the Cold War in Beijing. On the one hand, he, like his Germanic contemporaries, had denounced his formalistic past; on the other, both Ivens’ films and Tian’s operas produced at the height of the Cold War were also poetic and lyrical, and both follow their engagements with similar subjects in their previous works: the river as containers of life, culture, and movement; and the image of strong-willed and bodied women as social agents.  Co-sponsored by the UK Alumni Association.
